The Ethiopian Highlands around Lalibela:

This is all done in the center of the Lasta mountains which are another interesting place to spend some more days for everyone and it’s where you could be on the top of the third highest mountain of Ethiopia Abune Yosef, a prominent mountain near the eastern escarpment of the Ethiopian Highlands. At 4,260 metres (13,976 ft) it is the 3rd tallest mountain in Ethiopia and the 19th highest of Africa. It is located in the Lasta massif in the Semien Wollo Zone of the Amhara region.

The Best Time to visit Ethiopia:

The best time to visit Ethiopia is between January and March when clear, sunny days bring regular average daily temperatures of 25 °C (77 °F). This is Ethiopia’s busiest time to visit, with wildlife spotting at its peak and the festivals of Timkat and Leddet drawing huge crowds.

The rainy season (April to September) brings soaring temperatures and humid conditions. Due to rain, from May to August some roads in the Lower Omo Valley become impassable.

August is the hottest (and wettest) month with temperatures reaching 45 °C (113 °F) regularly in the lowlands. In the highlands temperatures are much more moderate but sightseeing is hampered by downpours of rain.

October to December is an excellent time to visit Ethiopia as the countryside is lushly pretty after all the rain, there are plentiful sunny days and historical sites and monuments are not overrun with tourists. Night time temperatures in highland areas often drop to between 5 °C (41 °F) and 10 °C (50 °F) during November and December so be sure to pack a jumper.

Ethiopian Weather:

Ethiopia is in the tropical zone laying between the Equator and the Tropic of Cancer. It has three different climate zones according to elevation. Kolla (Tropical zone) – is below 1830 metres in elevation and has an average annual temperature of about 27 degree Celsius with annual rainfall about 510 millimetres.

The Danakil Depression (Danakil Desert) is about 125 metres below sea level and the hottest region in Ethiopia where the temperature climbs up to 50 degree Celsius.

Woina Dega: (Subtropical zone) – includes the highlands areas of 1830 – 2440 metres in elevation has an average annual temperature of about 22 degree Celsius with annual rainfall between 510 and 1530 millimetres.

Dega: (Cool zone) – is above 2440 metres in elevation with an average annual temperature of about 16 degree Celsius with annual rainfall between 1270 and 1280 millimetres.

Ethiopian Seasons:

Kiremt or Meher (Summer) – June, July and August are the summer season. Heavy rain falls in these three months.

Belg (Autumn) – September, October and November are the spring season sometime known as the harvest season.

Bega (Winter) – December, January and February are the dry season with frost in Morning specially in January.

Tseday (Spring) – March, April and May are the autumn season with occasional showers. May is the hottest month in Ethiopia.

Mount Abune Yosef:

Mount Abune Yosef is located in the Lasta district of North Wollo Zone, between 12°8′7″N and 39°15′7″E.

This isolated mountain reaches up to 4,260m. Approximately it is 50 km (31 miles) far from lalibela town and has suitable wolf and bird habitats.

The climate is moist and cold at night with a wet season from June to October, and a dry season from November to May.

The average annual rainfall is 2,000 mm and the mean annual temperature ranges between 7.5 and 11 °C.
